Considering Deputy?

A Deputy alternative that speaks veterinary, not just shift work.

Deputy is a serious global scheduling platform serving over 320,000 workplaces, by its own count. It is also a per user, per module product with no veterinary page and no employment law advice behind it. Here is what to check before you commit your practice to it, and what a vet-only alternative looks like.

01What makes it different

A platform built for every industry everywhere is tuned for none in particular. Your rota is particular.

Deputy's UK pricing is published and per user: Lite at 3.25 pounds, Core at 4.25 and Pro at 6.50 per user per month, with HR, messaging and analytics as separate per user add-ons, a 20 pound monthly minimum invoice, and annual plans billed upfront and stated as non-refundable if cancelled early, all as published on their UK pricing page in July 2026. Veterinary appears on their site as customer stories, not as a product focus.

Vet HR starts from the other end: veterinary practices only, the rota modelled on your OOH and on call reality before launch, hours and holiday in the same build, your practice's branding on every screen, and a consultant who answers the employment law questions software cannot. One written quote covers it.

02What to check

Three things to check before choosing Deputy.

Each comes from Deputy's own published UK pages, as checked in July 2026.

01

Do the per-user arithmetic honestly

Per user pricing looks small until you multiply. A fifteen person practice on Core with the HR add-on is fifteen times 6.25 pounds a month before anything else, and there is a 20 pound monthly minimum invoice regardless. Price your real headcount across every module you would actually use.

02

Read the annual billing terms

Deputy's published terms state that annual plans are billed upfront and are not refunded if cancelled early. If your staff numbers move, and in veterinary practice they do, understand what you are committed to for the rest of the year before choosing annual pricing for the discount.

03

Test the veterinary fit yourself

Deputy has no veterinary product page: its vet presence is customer case studies. The scheduling defaults were built for a global, every-industry product. Use the free trial to model first and second on call, OOH recovery and multi-branch cover, and see how much configuring your practice must do.

03The systems

White-labelled systems, mapped to your kind of practice.

Every system carries your practice's name and branding, not ours. These are the ones that matter most here.

  • Rota system: Veterinary patterns are the starting point, not a configuration project: OOH, on call and cover rules are modelled with you before the system goes live.
  • Clock in and out: Time capture and payroll ready exports in the same build as the rota, with no per user, per module price sheet.
  • Custom builds: Where a platform offers the modules it has, we build the tool your practice is missing, scoped and quoted in writing first.
04Questions

Asked by practices like yours.

Is Vet HR really comparable to a platform like Deputy?

For a large multi-national workforce, Deputy's scale is the point and we are not that. For a UK veterinary practice of five to fifty staff, the comparison flips: you get a system built around your patterns, your branding rather than a platform's, and human HR advice included, from a specialist who only works with practices like yours.

Deputy has an HR add-on. Is that the same as HR support?

No. Deputy's published HR add-on is software: hiring, onboarding and document management tools at 2 pounds per user per month. It does not claim to answer employment law questions. Vet HR's support is a consultant who knows your practice, with the systems built around that relationship.

What does Vet HR cost compared with Deputy?

Deputy publishes per user prices; we quote per practice, in writing, before any work begins. Which is cheaper depends on your headcount and which add-ons you would need. The like for like comparison is software plus the HR support you currently buy separately, and we will happily be compared on that basis.

Can we keep Deputy and still use Vet HR for the HR side?

Yes. Plenty of practices start with consultancy only: contracts, policies, a difficult case, while keeping whatever software already works. If the software side later frustrates you, the systems conversation can happen then, with a written quote first.
