Free tool, no signup, statutory figures from GOV.UK

The veterinary holiday entitlement calculator.

Work out statutory holiday for any member of your team in ten seconds: full time, part time or the irregular hours that make veterinary rotas so hard to add up. Built for UK practices, checked against the GOV.UK rules.

days per week

Use half days too, for example 3.5. Statutory holiday is capped at 28 days, which most full time patterns reach.

Statutory entitlement
28.0 days
That is the full 5.6 weeks of paid holiday, capped at the statutory maximum of 28 days.

This tool gives the statutory minimum. Your contracts may offer more, and whether the 8 bank holidays sit inside or on top of this depends on the wording. It is guidance, not legal advice. For anything unusual, ask us.

01Why it is hard

The maths is simple until the hours stop being simple. Veterinary rotas rarely stay simple.

A five day vet is easy: 28 days and done. But a part time nurse on three fixed days, a receptionist whose hours change with the rota, and freelance vet cover paid by the hour each accrue holiday a different way. Get it wrong and it surfaces at the worst moment, usually when someone leaves.

This calculator handles the two patterns that trip practices up. The holiday calculations system does it for every member of staff, every pay run, without anyone reaching for a spreadsheet. If you would rather just have it right, book a free HR health check.

02Questions

Veterinary holiday entitlement, answered.

How much statutory holiday is a full time vet entitled to?

Almost all UK workers are entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year. For someone working five or more days a week that comes to 28 days, which is the statutory cap. A contract can offer more, but not less.

How is holiday worked out for part time staff?

You multiply 5.6 weeks by the number of days worked each week. Three days a week gives 16.8 days, four days gives 22.4 days. The same 5.6 week principle applies, scaled to the working pattern.

How does holiday accrue for irregular hours staff?

For irregular hours and part year workers, holiday accrues at 12.07 percent of the hours worked in each pay period. That percentage is simply 5.6 weeks expressed as a proportion of the working weeks in a year.

Do bank holidays count as part of the entitlement?

They can. The 8 bank holidays in England and Wales can be counted inside the 5.6 weeks, or given on top, depending on what the contract says. This is a common source of confusion, so it should be stated plainly in writing.
